Captive Review Ones to Watch 2019

Captive Review has named seven industry professionals in its 2019 Ones to Watch list, which includes regulators, lawyers and insurers.

The Ones to Watch list recognises the individuals that have recently risen to prominence in the industry and that will be looking to make their mark in the years ahead.

The list is as follows:

Ian Davis
Two years into his role at the State of Vermont, Davis has engaged with the international and US captive insurance industry. As the state continues to lead the way for the US market, Davis is among the players leading the charge with innovative ideas to keep Vermont ahead of the crowd. As more and more states ramp up their efforts to hit the gold standard, Davis’ impact will be clear to see in the year ahead.

Kirk Watkins
As the growth of employee benefits in the captive insurance industry continues, Trion Group practice leader Watkins is quickly making his mark on the space. Often cited as the fastest growing business line in captive insurance, Watkins’ role will grow in importance as more of the captive world integrates employee benefits in their entities.

Ben Whitehouse
After a number of years serving at the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, Whitehouse recently moved into the private sector to head up Butler Snow’s newly-launched captive practice. In this role, he will continue working with the department to develop the captive insurance industry in Tennessee. As the state bids to become more competitive, Whitehouse’s role will continue to grow in significance.

Anup Seth
Recently appointed global leader of underwriting solutions in Aon’s Captive and Insurance Management division, Seth’s role will see him responsible for the newly-created underwriting solutions line, which includes commercial reinsurance, White Rock and ILS management businesses. Following “impressive” results in Bermuda throughout the last three years, it will be interesting to watch Seth’s continued positive impact on the market.

Shiwei Jin
In the last 12 months, Jin was promoted to global programme and captive regional director for XL Catlin. Her expanded role includes driving global programme and captive business while working with XL Catlin’s broker partners. As the Asian market continues to attract attention from around the world, Jin will likely prove to be a driving force behind its growth.

Owen Williams
Previously a key figure in XL Catlin’s growing captive practice, Williams’ position at the newly-combined AXA XL is still unclear. However, having gained significant experience at Zurich and RSA, Williams is now perfectly positioned to make a positive impact on a larger entity and offer innovative solutions to a global customer base.

Alex Gedge
Following a stint at Willis Towers Watson, Gedge moved to JLT Group in 2017. Since then, JLT has enjoyed continued success in growing its book of business and was recently the subject of acquisition by insurance giant Marsh. As the two companies finalise the deal, Gedge will likely be a key player in driving the newly-combined business forward.
