After beginning the countdown of the Captive Review 2024 Power 50 yesterday with those placed 50-31, today we continue the run-down of the most influential people working in the captive insurance market today by revealing who placed from 30-11. You can read all about them and their achievements below.

- Phil Giles
Chief growth officer, ClearPoint Health
Phil Giles is a respected industry figure in the medical stop-loss arena, one biggest areas for captive growth over the last few years. After a career of nearly 35 years in the insurance industry, including 10 years at Artex and six years at QBE where he grew medical stop-loss captive business grew from $7 million to more than $125 million, Giles founded MSL Captive Solutions in February 2020, and was managing director. He recently left the firm to join ClearPoint Health as chief growth officer, a new private equity-backed company started up last year to provide medical stop-loss captive solutions to small and mid-sized firms.
- Amy O’Brien
Vice president TPA sales – carrier practice, Captives & Specialty, Gallagher Bassett
Amy O’Brien is highly thought of in the captive claims management arena, with experience in developing new claims management programmes and alternative risk retention arrangements for all kinds of captives, including heterogeneous, homogeneous, single parent, pools, RRGs, and other carrier outsourcing opportunities, for those based in the US and offshore. In 24 years at Gallagher Bassett, she has climbed the ladder and has handled claims in all kinds of industries including manufacturers, trucking/fleet, real estate, long term care facilities, employee staffing, auto dealers, restaurants, non-profits, gaming, entertainment, small businesses, affinity groups, and many more.
- Anjanette Fowler
Managing director, senior vice president, insurance and specialised industries group, PNC
As a managing director and senior vice president of the insurance and specialised industries group at PNC, Anjanette Fowler leads a team of professionals who provide customised investment solutions for insurance companies, including captives. With over 25 years of experience in the investment management industry, she has a deep understanding of the complex financial and regulatory challenges that insurance and captive clients face. Additionally, she is a strong captive advocate, regularly appearing and speaking at industry conferences. She has also chaired CICA’s Amplify Women committee, which aims to tackle some of the challenges faced by women in the captive insurance industry.
- Paul Macey
President, USA Risk Group
A significant leader in the Cayman captive market, Paul Macey makes his first appearance on the Power 50 this year. Macey joined USA Risk Group in 2005 as a senior vice president and in July 2009 was promoted to president of the Cayman office. In 2019 he then led a management buyout of the company and was appointed president. Macey has 35 years of experience in the insurance industry, which also includes eight years with Johnson & Higgins. Few are as knowledgeable on the Cayman captive industry, and he shares that knowledge by being a frequent commentator on trends in this important market.
- Oliver Schofield
CEO and managing partner, RISCS CWC
Oliver Schofield took his captive consultancy RISCS to the next level when he merged it with Cutts-Watson Consulting in March last year. The move expanded the firm’s geographic presence and brought Hall of Famer Malcolm Cutts-Watson into the fold. The firm has played a key role in assessing the potential opportunity of a UK captive regime, with Cutts-Watson and Schofield involved in ongoing efforts to support a UK captive sector. Besides this influence, Schofield has earned a reputation as an innovative entrepreneur in the industry and is a frequent commentator on the European captive scene.
- Paul Lewis
Chief business development officer, MAXIS Global Benefits Network
Paul Lewis has nearly two decades of experience in the global employee benefits industry, working with multinationals looking to implement successful employee benefits plans around the world. He is responsible for MAXIS Global Benefits Network’s global business development teams who work with the company’s strategic partners, and is considered instrumental in this process. Lewis is also an expert in the world of captives, and has been vocal on his intent to grow this area of employee benefits, sharing his expertise on the rise of captives and his predictions for the future.
- Christian Keller
Chief strategy and transformation officer, Generali Employee Benefits
A popular and knowledgeable figure with nearly 25 years of experience in the employee benefits space, Christian Keller has been one of the leaders in the march towards take up of captive solutions for employee benefits in Europe. In just over six years with Generali Employee Benefits he has quickly risen up the ranks, progressing from regional manager EMEA – Central Europe, to head of marketing and customer experience, before taking on his current role in October 2022. A previous winner of our Captive Service Professional of the Year Award in 2022, Keller is a major asset to the European employee benefits sector.
- Ryan Gustafson
Head of captive solutions, AIG
Ryan Gustafson makes his Power 50 debut after being promoted to head up AIG’s captive solutions unit at the end of 2022, responsible for AIG’s group captive, North American fronting, segregated cell and captive management & advisory divisions. The role puts Gustafson in the unique position of working across captive management and captive fronting, connecting him with a wide cross-section of the captive market. Gustafson has worked for AIG for nine years, and before this promotion served in Toronto as head of multinational – Canada, and then in New York as head of multinational – North America.
- Grainne Richmond
Executive vice president and head of captives, Aon
Grainne Richmond is a big mover in this year’s Power 50 in recognition of the prominent role she plays in Bermuda’s captive market, and championing the domicile. Richmond has over 23 years of experience in the insurance and risk management industry and has led Aon’s Bermuda captives operation since September 2022, after moving from SRS. She frequently shares her expertise with the industry through speaking opportunities at conferences and on webinars. She has also been president of the Bermuda Insurance Managers Association for the last five years, where she advocates for the interests and growth of Bermuda’s wider captive insurance sector.
- Renea Louie
Chief operations officer, Pro Group Captive Management Services
One of the industry’s biggest advocates for captive insurance, along with building a wide range of skills in the formation and ongoing management of captives over the last 18 years with Pro Group, Renea Louie gives a significant amount back to industry. She has served the industry as a board member on ICCIE for two terms and continues to serve on its marketing committee. She has served on numerous committees for CICA, RIMS, and SIIA, along with state associations for Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Vermont, Tennessee, and Hawaii. She is the current co-chairman of the Western Region Conference, and was CICA chair in 2023.
- Mike Meehan
Principal, Milliman
An industry professional with over 30 years of experience, Mike Meehan moves up into the top 20 of the Power 50 in reflection of his leadership of Milliman, which retained its Actuarial Firm of the Year award at the 2023 Captive Review US Awards, and his role as a captive advocate for the wider industry. Meehan is well-known in the US captive space for his frequent appearances and speaking roles at industry conferences, and has served on both the boards of the North Carolina Captive Insurance Association and Vermont Captive Insurance Association. His role expanded last year as he additionally took on responsibility for Milliman’s Bermuda presence.
- Adriana Scherzinger
Head of alternative risk solutions, Zurich North America
Adriana Scherzinger is one of the biggest movers on our list after last year stepping up to become the US national accounts head of alternative risk solutions at Zurich North America. Previously head of captives sales and execution with the company from March 2022, Scherzinger has quickly become a well-known and vocal figure in the US captive space. She is a seasoned re/insurance and risk management professional with nearly 17 years of insurance industry experience holding a variety of key roles including responsibility for the service and management of complex international insurance programmes for multinational clients.
- Brian McNamara
Head of multinational, North America and global captive solutions, Allianz Commercial
Bermuda-based Brian McNamara keeps his spot in the Power 50 at number 18 as he remains one of the most experienced captive professionals on the island. While Allianz has in the last year changed up its operating structure to combine the Allianz Global Corporate and Specialty unit with Allianz’s commercial insurance business under the trade name Allianz Commercial, McNamara’s influence over North American multinational clients and captive owners remains significant. The company at the end of 2022 expressed an intention to target growth in its ART and captives offering by devoting investment to these businesses, which is further increasing his influence on the market.
- Suzanne Sadlier
Executive vice president, captive management, Artex North America
Suzanne Sadlier joined Artex as managing director of its Cayman office in June 2022, and at the start of this year moved up to her current role after a restructure to the Artex’s North American operation which put her in one of three key leadership positions with responsibility for captive management services, renewals, risk management services and client stewardship in the domiciles of Bermuda, Cayman, Hawaii, Vermont and South Carolina. A popular figure known by many captive professionals in Cayman from her seven years at the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, Sadlier makes her first appearance in the Power 50 this year.
- Vincent Barrett
Managing director, captive and insurance management, Aon Global Risk Consulting
Vincent Barrett returns to the Power 50 in reflection of his significance to Aon’s global captive operation, and the increasing importance of cell captives to the market. Barrett has global responsibility for Aon’s White Rock group of protected cell companies, incorporated cell companies, and the captive unit’s run-off and finality solutions practice group. A core part of Aon’s captive leadership team for a long time, he first joined the captive unit’s Dublin office in January 2007 from Marsh with responsibility for business development in Europe, and in his current role sits on the global board of the Aon Captive & Insurance Management group.
- Steve Bauman
Global programmes and captives director, Americas, AXA XL
Steve Bauman is one of the most experienced and respected figures in the US captive fronting sector, and is at the helm of AXA XL as it looks to expand its operation further in the US, particularly in the group captive segment. He took up his current position when re-joining XL Catlin in May 2017, and remained in the role when the company was acquired by AXA in 2018. He has more than 30 years of experience in captives and the wider insurance market, including more than 10 years as head of captive services at Zurich.
- David Gibbons
Partner, PwC Bermuda
David Gibbons heads PwC Bermuda’s dedicated captive insurance group, working with 200 captives, including some of the largest captive accounts in the world, and delivering solutions throughout the captive lifecycle. He is a contributor to the captive industry on key industry topics, such as through thought leadership including in the Captive Review Bermuda report, and is a past chair of the Bermuda Captive conference. In his role as captive leader and regional human capital leader he is also a champion for diversity and inclusion and developing a new generation of talent in the captive insurance industry.
- Will Thomas-Ferrand
International practice leader, Marsh Captive Solutions
Making a welcome return to the Power 50 is Will Thomas-Ferrand. Thomas-Ferrand has worked for Marsh for 20 years, including the last six of which in his current role leading the international practice. Being positioned at the largest captive manager in the world gives him a lot of influence over non-US captives, and he is currently overseeing significant growth within his segment, with captive premium growth of 13% in Guernsey, 36% in Luxembourg and 46% in Singapore between 2020 and 2022. With Hall of Famer Lorraine Stack moving into a wider risk management role, his experience could be important in coming years.
- Emma Sansom
Group head of captives, Zurich Insurance
After taking a big step up from running the UK captive services arm of Zurich to becoming group head of captives at the start of last year, Emma Sansom has impressively settled into her new position. She has earned praise for taking the lead on all things ART in her first year and pushing her underwriting colleagues to think outside the box. Bringing fresh impetus to the role, she has brought new discussions to the table around subjects like captive solutions for artificial intelligence and the advantages of European group captives, which is just what the industry needs to keep innovating.
- Peter Child
CEO, SRS Europe & managing director, SRS Guernsey
While SRS’ European operation is still relatively young, it’s fast growing and is a clear area of focus for SRS’ new investment from Integrum. Peter Child was brought in from Artex with a strong reputation in July 2021 to make SRS a force in Europe, and he has been making good progress since then, as SRS has taken on significant clients and won Captive Manager of the Year at the 2023 Captive Review European Awards. With the acquisition of Robus Group earlier this year it should take SRS’ European captive management business to the next level, extending Child’s influence.
