Read below to discover more about their accomplishments and why they made our top 10 this year.
And if you missed it, don’t forget to check out the six new inductees to the Captive Review Hall of Fame, and our list of 10 Ones to Watch in the captive industry, both of which we also revealed this week.
- Jennifer Gallagher
President, Artex North America
Artex may have restructured its North America operation at the start of this year to a three-pillar model, but sitting above those three pillars remains Jennifer Gallagher. One of three people who built Artex from its inception, today she is responsible for staff and business operations within the United States, including mergers and acquisitions, recruitment, branding, professional standards, product development, market management and new business production. Her leadership helped Artex win Captive Manager of the Year (> $1bn GWP) for the second year running at the 2023 Captive Review US Awards.
- Ron Sulisz
President, SRS
The highest new entry in our Power 50 this year, Ron Sulisz enters straight into the top 10 after earning a major promotion in April last year, taking up the title of SRS president from Hall of Famer Brady Young. While Young remains CEO of the company, Cayman-based Sulisz took on a number of new responsibilities that gave him significant influence over the internal workings of SRS – one of the largest captive management firms, which is set to continue its upward growth trajectory thanks to new investment last year from Integrum. Sulisz has spent 19 years at SRS and had previously been CEO of its Cayman office.
- Anne Marie Towle
CEO, Global Risk and Captive Solutions, Hylant
Anne Marie Towle is a highly experienced and respected captive leader willing to share her expertise with the next generation of captive professions. Leading Hylant Global Captive Solutions since September 2019, she has brought on several notable ones to watch within Hylant and through Hylant sponsoring CICA’s annual essay contest, supports college students interested in learning about captives. Her leadership saw Hylant pick up Next Gen Initiative of the Year at the 2023 Captive Review US Awards. In addition to leading Hylant’s captive practice, she last year additionally took on the role of Global Risk Management CEO, extending her influence over Hylant’s largest clients.
- Peter Carter
Head of captive and insurance management solutions, WTW
Peter Carter maintains his top 10 position in the Power 50 after a strong year for WTW in which it was named both Captive Consultant and Employee Benefits Consultant of the Year at the 2023 Captive Review European Awards. Carter has headed up WTW’s global captive management operation since November 2019, and from last October took on the added responsibility of leading WTW’s climate practice. He is a frequent speaker at industry events and a vocal commentator on the big captive issues, especially in Europe, and always has valuable insights to share.
- Michael Serricchio
Managing director, Americas consulting leader, Marsh Captive Solutions
Our biggest climber on the Power 50 this year, Michael Serricchio ascends into the top 10 in recognition of the important role he plays in assisting both Marsh clients in the US and globally with the feasibility and organisation of single parent captives, risk retention groups and cell captives. With such a wide remit and involvement at the largest captive manager in the world, providing services surrounding various captive issues and concerns, including capitalisation levels, new coverages, tax concepts, captive investment opportunities, and cost savings, Serricchio’s influence infiltrates a great deal of the global captive landscape.
- Marine Charbonnier
Head of underwriting, captives and facultatives, APAC Europe, AXA XL
Already one of the most established and respected figures in the European captive market, from the start of last year Marine Charbonnier’s influence was extended to also cover the APAC captive market. Charbonnier has worked with captives since 1992, which includes a 21-year spell in broking with WTW-owned Gras Savoye in France, giving her a broad base of knowledge from which she has been a highly respected commentator for many years. She was named Captive Service Professional of the Year at the 2023 Captive Review European Awards, and as the French captive market evolves, her expertise could be even more valuable in coming years.
- Nick Hentges
CEO, Captive Resources
Nick Hentges maintains his position in the Power 50 top four, reflecting the continued importance of group captives, and medical stop-loss group captives in particular, to the market today. Hentges is considered to be one of the foremost experts in how to run a successful group captive. He is involved in the overall representation of Captive Resources to captive clients, along with strategic planning and sharing responsibility for the day-to-day running of the company. Hentges was included on our prestigious 25 at 25 list, and his influence was also heightened last year by being chair of CICA.
- Dan Towle
President, CICA
As president of the Captive Insurance Companies Association, Dan Towle is extremely well-connected to all the key players in the captive industry. His growing influence aligns with the growing number of CICA members and conference attendees, both of which recently hit record totals, along with CICA’s increasing international reach, and its efforts to champion the industry around the globe. A regular attendee and speaker at industry events, Towle has also been behind several key industry initiatives, including NextGen and Amplify Women, which are increasingly proving their value with the emergence of younger captive professionals and more women leaders.
- Nancy Gray
Regional managing director, Americas, Aon Captive & Insurance Managers
Last year’s number one in our Power 50 maintains a top two spot in this year’s list. Gray is another to have featured on our recent 25 at 25 list and has maintained a great deal of influence over the captive industry through the last three decades. Gray joined Aon when IRMG was acquired in 2001, and moved into her position of regional managing director – Americas, in 2009, giving her a wide sphere of influence across the US, Bermuda, Cayman, Barbados and Vancouver. She has also previously served as a director and treasurer of ICCIE, the VCIA, and the NRRA.
- Sandy Bigglestone
Deputy commissioner – captive insurance, Vermont Department of Financial Regulation
Sandy Bigglestone moves up to number one on our Power 50 after a year in which Vermont established itself as the centre of the captive industry. Vermont is now the clear largest captive domicile in the world, both by captive numbers (659 – year-end 2023), and captive premium ($42 billion – year-end 2022). As the chief regulator in Vermont, Bigglestone’s influence over captives is extensive, but her captive advocacy helps the industry more widely – through regularly speaking at conferences, entering universities to promote captive insurance as a career, and being part of the Vermont delegation sent to Mexico last year to raise awareness of captives.
